Yuneec is a world-leading drone manufacturer headquartered in Hong Kong. In 2016, Yuneec set up a technology center in Greater Zurich to work on state of the art technology for the drones of tomorrow. The innovative environment and the active drone developer community in Greater Zurich were the decisive factors in Yuneec's location selection.
Founded in Hong Kong in 1999, Yuneec is the world's second largest manufacturer of commercial and consumer drones. Around 200,000 Yuneec drones were sold in 2017 alone. Two years ago Intel invested USD 60 million in the fast-growing technology corporation that is Yuneec and the two companies entered a product development partnership. The first result of this partnership is the newest drone model "Yuneec Typhoon H" which was introduced in 2016.
At the end of 2016, Yuneec established a research and development center in the outskirts of Zurich. Yuneec Advanced Technology Labs AG currently employs 9 drone experts and planning future commemoration continues to expand its R&D team. "Our research focuses on highly integrated computer vision and obstacle avoidance as well as advanced flight control algorithms, enabling the next generation of intelligent drones," explains Simone Guscetti, Head of Technology.
Asked about the reasons for locating in Greater Zurich, company founder and chairman Jiang Wenyan says: "The innovative environment in Greater Zurich is unique for a technology company like Yuneec. We can work with leading universities such as ETH Zurich and recruit excellent engineers. Greater Zurich's outstanding drone ecosystem also includes key industrial partners and an active PX4 open-source software developer community." The superior infrastructure, accessibility and high reliability confirmed the company's decision to invest in a location near Zurich.
GZA (Greater Zurich Area Ltd) and its network partner ETH Zurich supported Yuneec with information about Greater Zurich as a business and technology location as well as with contacts within the Dronecode technology ecosystem.
